Four women in a house in the forest. Three of them have recently gone through breakups, two have brought their children with them. Over a few short summer weeks, they share food and wine, as well as their experiences and frustrations with men and coupledom. And they boil eggs. Nelly tends her little girl lovingly, but her gaze also betrays guilt, shame and a hope that one day the girl will understand why her mother left her father.
The book is painful and rich in detail, with fine, powerful tales of the women’s shared summer, described with tenderness and humour. At the core of the novel is the delicately nuanced, heart-rending tale of a mother who is afraid of losing a daughter.
