In No Further Than This, journalist Malin Kulseth explores the intense and polarising debate around transgender rights in Norway and thw world, revealing how this struggle has become a central front in a broader culture war with far-reaching consequences.

The book opens with J.K. Rowling and her now-infamous 2019 tweet in support of gender-critical activist Maya Forstater, an act that ignited a storm of backlash and distanced Rowling from much of her fanbase. It soon became clear that, in her feminist view, Rowling saw parts of the trans rights movement as a threat to her own fight for women’s rights. But how did we reach this point?

Kulseth also examines the disqualification of boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting from the Paris Olympics, showing how speculation and harassment around gender identity are misused to create fear and division. The book further explores the heated debate surrounding gender-affirming care for children and adolescents and how calls for “more research” are often used to justify restrictions on treatment access.

Through in-depth interviews with patients, gender researchers, sexologists, and activists, Kulseth offers a nuanced and balanced perspective on the gender debate. She unpacks the historical, religious, and political forces shaping public discourse and asks why public perception of transgender identities has become so fear-driven. Most importantly, she shows how this toxic rhetoric undermines the sense of safety that all of us rely on in an open, democratic society.
