This story is set during the Second World War. From an early age, Kristin has looked after her home and siblings, and has not been particularly concerned with what is going on in Europe towards the end of the 1930s. She just dreams about marrying Jan and living happily together. But soon the war casts its shadow over her world, and she is forced to make a choice that will influence the course of her life.
