This is the fifth volume in the biography of King Haakon and Queen Maud.
The book begins in 1929 when Crown Prince Olav travels to Stockholm to bring his young bride home. In this book, for the first time, we have an authentic account of Queen Maud's illness and death in exile. The main focus of the book is however on the Second World War: we follow the royal family through Norway, as they flee from Oslo, via Hamar, to Molde and Tromsø. In this context, Crown Prince Olav becomes particularly important, as he moves into a leading position in the narrative after his mother's death.
