On an island at the mouth of the fjord lies a house where Edith lives with her daughters, Agnes and Cecile. They have lost a father and a twin sister. The house contains a telephone exchange and a telegraph, which Edith operates on behalf of the whole island community.
The German Gestapo officer, Wilhelm, stops by regularly to interrogate Edith about who they call and when. At the same time, a young man is in hiding from the Nazis as he waits for a boat to arrive at the island.
The Beautiful Days is a beautiful, poetic novel based on potent material, with an unbroken thread of tension quivering through the entire story.
