Sunstorms have made the earth uninhabitable. Humanity's last hope, 24 selected passengers in cryo chambers and with erased memories, are on their way to the closest habitable planet – 543 years away. Norway, the only conscious passenger on board, does their duties, getting the best out of its watch and overlooking the strange banging sounds from the air conditioner. Lightyears is a sad, beautiful and exciting journey back in time and space.
Didrik Morits Hallstrøm writes Science Fiction that will give you chills. The depictions of the lonely life aboard the space ship «Vita» is written in detail and intensity, instantly gripping the reader. This is a story that could not have been told in any other perspective. Through short and compact narratives the reader is included in the life and routines of «Vita». The space ship, dead, empty and awful, is brought to life in an impressive way through the writing of Hallstrøm. This is a book that you can pick up without regret.
Worrying and thought provoking.
I do not see the point to decide what this novel is actually about. I like that I for days after I end reading it still walk around thinking about what the book is trying to tell me, and then come up with new things.
DAG OG TID
Lightyears is this years best interstellar small town novel. And that is no small achievement.
