History remembers Rome. History remembers the Vikings. But time in between was so dark and merciless that the world chose to forget it.

Europe, early 5th century. The Roman Empire is crumbling under the inept Emperor Honorius. Ioannes Claudius, son of a Roman general, is sent to the edge of the empire, to a Britannia where loyalty is bought with blood and the name of the emperor no longer provides protection. Meanwhile, in what will one day become Norway, the young woman Vivja survives the massacre of her people. She carries visions of the wolf age, endless winter, and a migration that will draw entire peoples south.

When their paths cross, the two are bound together by necessity and fate. Together, Vivja and Ioannes flee to Italy, unaware that furious Gothic forces are marching on Rome. Ahead of them lies a journey through the wolf age and the shield age – where one world dies and a new one is born.
