Gaute & Veronika is a novel from a house in which one waits for death and contemplates the past. Lisbeth and Truls were childhood sweethearts and have now been together again for over ten years after each having been married and lost their spouses. Lisbeth's adult son, Gaute, lives with them, spending his days sitting in the Chinese restaurant or library nearby. But this autumn Truls' daughter, Veronika, also comes home.
