Gaute & Veronika is a novel from a house in which one waits for death and contemplates the past. Lisbeth and Truls were childhood sweethearts and have now been together again for over ten years after each having been married and lost their spouses. Lisbeth's adult son, Gaute, lives with them, spending his days sitting in the Chinese restaurant or library nearby. But this autumn Truls' daughter, Veronika, also comes home after living in New York for several years, where she owned and ran a successful art gallery. She has contracted the same illness that killed her mother. Has she just come back to die at home, or is she also running from something? The lodgers in the basement are expecting their first child at any time. Lisbeth, who has come to terms with the fact that she will never have her own grandchildren, is afraid she won't have a role in the life of this child.
