Moulton and me (Moulton og meg) is the tale of three sisters who wish for a bicycle. The girls’ parents are a little bit peculiar, and much of the story is spent depicting life for the girls in the neighbourhood alongside their parents and determined grandmother. They receive a bicycle, but not quite like anyone else’s.
In addition to being a superb artist, Torill Kove has a feeling for words, focusing on articulating things in original ways and making room for comical little episodes. These elements transform her books into small masterpieces for the enjoyment of adults and children alike.
The Animated Short that this book is based on was nominated for the Oscar Awards in 2014.
“The adult reader will notice the retrospective approach, but I don’t think this evidence of the 60s and 70s will hinder a child’s experience of the book. The text and illustrations provide clear settings with plenty of scope for empathy.”
“On the whole this is also a thoroughly original book with a lot of humour. […] And because the book alludes to something under the surface that threatens to be lost, it is exciting to read even without any outwardly dramatic action.”
